El avestruz de América, que los Indios guaraníes llaman ñandú y churí, habita las provincias de Tucumán y Salta, el Paraguay, las llanuras de Montevideo, las pampas de Buenos Aires, y se dice que hay de estas aves hasta en el estrecho de Magallanes.
Prefieren el campo raso a los bosques, y se asocian por pares y a veces en bandadas de más de treinta individuos.
Donde no se les molesta, se acercan a las habitaciones campestres y no huyen de la gente de a pie; pero donde se acostumbra darles caza, son en extremo ariscas, y huyen con tanta velocidad que aun con buenos caballos es dificultoso alcanzarlas.

The ostrich of America, which the Guarani Indians call ñandú and churí, inhabits the provinces of Tucumán and Salta, Paraguay, the plains of Montevideo, the pampas of Buenos Aires, and it is said that there are these birds even in the Strait of Magellan.
They prefer open country to forests, and they associate in pairs and sometimes in flocks of more than thirty individuals.
Where they are not disturbed, they approach rural dwellings and do not flee from people on foot; but where they are accustomed to being hunted, they are extremely shy, and they flee with such speed that even with good horses it is difficult to catch them.
