The opening lines
How El capitán Veneno begins
On the afternoon of March 26, 1848, there were gunshots and knife fights in Madrid between a handful of civilians who, as they expired, shouted the until then foreign cry of 'Long live the Republic!', and the Army of the Spanish Monarchy (brought or created by Ataúlfo, reconstituted by Don Pelayo and reformed by Trastamara), of which at that time the visible chief was, in the name of Doña Isabel II, the President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of War, Don Ramón María Narváez.
And enough of this history and politics, and let us move on to speak of less known and more pleasant things, to which those lamentable events gave origin and opportunity.
