Había una vez un hombre que vivía en Buenos Aires, y estaba muy contento porque era un hombre sano y trabajador.
Pero un día se enfermó, y los médicos le dijeron que solamente yéndose al campo podría curarse.
El no quería ir, porque tenía hermanos chicos a quienes daba de comer; y se enfermaba cada día más.
Hasta que un amigo suyo, que era director del Zoológico, le dijo un día:

Once there was a man who lived in Buenos Aires, and he was very happy because he was a healthy and hardworking man.
But one day he became ill, and the doctors told him that only by going to the countryside could he be cured.
He did not want to go, because he had little brothers whom he fed; and he became more ill every day.
Until a friend of his, who was the director of the Zoo, said to him one day:

About Cuentos de la selva
Eight stories Horacio Quiroga wrote for children, set in the subtropical forest of Misiones in the far north of Argentina: a sick man carried home by the giant tortoise he once saved, flamingos who go to a ball in stockings made of snakeskin, alligators at war with a steamship. The sentences are short and the stories move fast — one of the gentlest real books to start reading Spanish with.
